Background

Over the past few years, there has been a significant growth in the sport of tennis. In addition to the goals set out in the Town's Recreation Playbook, last year, Newmarket announced a Municipal Capital Facilities Agreement with Shining Hill Developments that will see a new tennis facility and clubhouse constructed on Bennington Road. This project is well underway and construction has begun.

Construction is set to begin on Newmarket's new tennis facility

In January 2024, construction will begin on Newmarket’s new state-of-the art tennis facility (on Bennington Road, west of LaPlante Street).

As part of the Municipal Capital Facilities Agreement(External link) between the Town and Shining Hill Developments, a new tennis facility is being constructed that will be an outdoor, lit, 10-court facility, with eight courts being bubbled in the winter months. This represents an expanded offering from the current six courts in the summer and three in the winter.

How will the Tennis Club Operate?

The Newmarket Tennis Club, a not-for-profit club, will continue to operate their summer club at the new facility, with Council endorsing a Town-operated model during the winter season. The Town-operated model will be introduced as a pilot program and staff will report to Council in the spring of 2025 for public input and consideration on the pilot project.

Public engagement has been a key part of the process and feedback has been gathered through emails, surveys, postcards and a public meeting with the tennis community.

    Naming of the Tennis Club

Council also passed a motion to name the new facility the Keith Davis Tennis Centre in honour of a former community leader in the sport. Keith Davis is credited with starting the tennis club in Newmarket in 1946 and was an integral part of the tennis community.

To learn more about the new Keith Davis Tennis Centre, read the Staff Report.

Construction on the Keith Davis Tennis Centre is being undertaken by Shining Hill Developments, and its engineering consultants SCS Consulting Group Ltd.
