Council receives update on the future of pickleball in Newmarket
At several council meetings through 2023 and 2024, Newmarket residents have showed their support for the growth of pickleball locally with the construction of a dedicated pickleball facility.
After a thorough site selection process, the Town is preparing for the construction of a new facility with 20 courts located at 175 Bayview Parkway, at the south end of George Richardson Park. The design will include an inflatable bubble for year-round play. Provision will be made for a future clubhouse with change rooms and washroom facilities.
Several criteria were considered in selecting this location including distance from residential housing, parking, potential displacement of other facilities, capacity to grow, as well as the location of existing facilities to ensure distribution of recreation access across the community.
Various noise mitigation strategies will be explored as part of the design of this facility.
Design is ongoing, and field investigations started in fall 2024. The Town is targeting to start construction in spring 2025, with completion by the end of the same year.
To learn more about the future of pickleball in Newmarket, read the Staff Report or watch the discussion from the Council Meeting.
A public information centre will be schedule in early 2025 to present the proposed design.
Background
Over the past few years, there has been a significant growth in the sport of pickleball. This growth, coupled with the goals set out in the Town’s Recreation Playbook has identified a need for a dedicated, year-round pickleball facility.

It would make access so much easier for people who live in the north-west part of town. on FacebookShare Have you discussed the idea of opening Bayview Avenue to Green Lane at the north end of the park? Hi Jean, thanks for visiting this page. The area north of George Richardson Park is actually within the Town of East Gwillimbury. There are presently no plans to make this connection.
Share Will residents need to buy memberships to play at the facility or will you offer pay as you go purchases?
The estimated construction date of the facility will take place what month and year?
Is facility use open ONLY to newmarket residents?
Thank you

Hi John, thanks for your interest. We are working on an operating model at this time. We do anticipate that there will be a Town operated winter club and a summer club operated by a non-profit organization. We expect that both operations will include a mix of memberships and pay as you go options. We are optimistic that the construction will happen throughout 2025 with a potential opening in November, 2025.
Thank you for your contribution!
